Hello, this is an auction for a Confederate bond issued in 1864 to raise money for the Confederacy. It has ALL the coupons still attached, and each coupon was worth $30 upon maturity and they are all hand signed and numbered. This is a true piece of US history! I bought this bond from Heritage Galleries here in Dallas around 1990 and they told me it was from a large hoard of such bonds that European banks, most notably France and England had. Despite repeated overtures to the US Government after the war to pay up on the bonds, Uncle Sam said NO and they were pushed into storage somewhere where they were for many years. The bond is matted and framed, and would look great in any office or den. It is not ripped or torn anywhere, but many tiny creases are visible but they do not detract from the appearance. One thing about this one, it still has all the coupons attached, and you might know that the longer the war dragged on, the more coupons were detached and use in hand to hand commerce as currency. In time of war back then, open hostility often prompted people to hide their cash, for instance burying it. In modern finance, the use of the term “coupon” when speaking of bonds, ties back to the coupons you see here. Note, this piece of history was bought from Heritage Galleries here in Dallas, and they would not deal in copies or forgeries. Winning bidder agrees to pay actual shipping whichever way we agree to process it. It has to do with whether we agree to roll the item up, or ship it as very fragile and handle with care.
