For cards manufactured after 1980 we will only make a grade estimate if we feel the card falls below near mint range. Chrome, Prizm, Select, EX, etc… with silver and metallic foil or high gloss finishes are particularly prone to some level of surface scratching. Pacific, Donruss, Playoff and some other certain sets from the 1990s through 2000s are prone to edge chipping and flaking. Thick cards produced from the late 1990s until even today are often found with edge issues and surface issues. On card autographs which were handled by several people before they were even issued in packs frequently have smudges or scratches. As manufacturers experimented with different card stocks, thicknesses, glosses etc… inevitably they encountered unexpected quality control issues. This is the reason that many modern and ultra modern cards have zero population or low populations in gem mint grades. The most common flaws on modern cards will be surface scratches, print lines or refractor lines. We will not note these common flaws unless they are severe enough that the overall card grade would drop into the EX range or below.
