New Martinsville Bowl Newport 3 Section Silver City Flanders Poppy Sterling An Elegant Decorative SILVER CITY STERLING SILVER OVERLAY 3 Section CRYSTAL BOWL from NEW MARTINSVILLE GLASS COMPANY of New Martinsville, West Virginia, FLANDERS POPPY, circa 1907-1984 DESCRIPTION: The bowl was hand decorated by a talented artist. The color palette used is classic sterling silver overlay on clear glass. The scalloped rim of the bowl is trimmed in bright, bold sterling silver. The flanders poppies are nestled in a large number of feathery silver leaves. See the photos. CONDITION: While this decorative bowl is classified as used, its condition is superb. We can find no defects or damage. There are no chips, nicks, cracks, rubbings, scratches, crazing or hairlines. The silver overlay is tightly adhered to the glass. See the photos to judge for yourself. DIMENSIONS: This bowl has a diameter of 6 3/8″ with a height of 2″. HISTORY/MARKS: The New Martinsville Glass Company was an American manufacturer of decorative glass products in New Martinsville, West Virginia. New Martinsville Glass Co. was founded in 1900 by Mr. Mark Douglas and George Matheny. Plant construction was started in 1900 with the first glass production on June 21, 1901. In March 1907, the New Martinsville plant was destroyed by flood and fire. By October 1907, the plant was rebuilt and was back in operation. In mid 1944, the firm changed its name to Viking Glass Company which operated until 1986. In 1987, Kenneth Dalzell, a former president of Fostoria Glass Company, purchased the factory and renamed it Dalzell-Viking. Production ceased in 1998. Most New Martinsville Glass is not marked. The Silver Overlay is from Silver City of Meriden, Connecticut which operated from 1907-1984. The pattern is called Flanders Poppies to commemorate the fallen soldiers and was probably made after WW1. Please view all pictures carefully as they are part of the description.
