The pair were raised in London by their uncle, and were exposed to exotic art from an early age through their guardian’s extensive interest in Eastern art, including a collection of Japanese woodblocks of fauna and flora. The twins artistic skills were highly developed by their early teenage years and they exhibited when they were 13 at the Royal Institute of Watercolour Painters. The Jungle Book (1908) was to be the last commission that the brothers worked on due to the death Charles later that year. The extraordinary success of their illustrations to accompany Kipling’s classic tale firmly established the reputation for Edward and the following year, a set of his illustrations were published in The Fables of Aesop (1909). For the following decade, Edward focused on illustrations from nature that proved to marginalise his popularity, though his art continued to be published in a variety of books, including Birds and Beasts, The Life of the Bee, and Fabre’s Book of Insects (1921). In 1924, however, Edward Detmold enjoyed a return to widespread critical acclaim as a book illustrator due to his stunning suite of illustrations published in The Arabian Nights (1924). Appearing to be satisfied with thisachievement, Detmold retired and withdrew to Montgomeryshire where he lived for the rest of his life. Aesop (620-560 BC), known only for the genre of fables ascribed to him, was by tradition a slave who was a contemporary of Croesus and Peisistratus in the mid-sixth century BC in ancient Greece. The various collections that go under the rubric “Aesop’s Fables” are still taught as moral lessons and used as subjects for various entertainments, especially children’s plays and cartoons. Most of what are known as Aesopic fables is a compilation of tales from various sources, many of which originated with authors who lived long before Aesop. Demetrius Phalereus, a Greek philosopher, made the first collection of these fables around 300 BC. This was later translated into Latin by Phaedrus, a slave himself, around 25 BC. The fables from these two collections were soon brought together and were eventually retranslated into Greek by Babrius around A.D. 230. Many additional fables were included, and the collection was in turn translated to Arabic and Hebrew, further enriched by additional fables from these cultures.
