I am selling this very nice vintage grenadilla flute with open G#, plateau keys and C foot. Made by August Seidel, Hamburg. The keys and the mechanism appears to be made of solid silver. There are no adjusting screws for the mechanism. There’s also a sealed crack, located at the base of the headjoint – most likely caused by shrinkage of the wood. But the headjoint doesn’t leak. The flute has the usual Briccialdi thumb key system, plus an extra small lever for operating the G key. Pitch: A=440 Hz. Year of manufacture: Dating from before 1952, when August Seidel (established in 1896) sold his company to Josef Müller. The company is still in existence under the name Josef Müller and is currently operated by his son, Peter Müller. The flute has been refurbished with new pads and fresh cork. But there is however a caveat: According to the repairer who did the job, there is a problem with having standard modern pads on this flute. The flute originally had soft, custom-made pads with a 2mm hole in the middle. And since most modern pads have a 4mm hole in the middle, and the only 2mm pads being available on the market are the wrong size, the repairer simply had to make compromises. On top of that, the spuds having too small a diameter for 4mm holes, and the washers not being 100% compatible with modern pads, probably isn’t helpful either in terms of stability.The flute does indeed play with those new pads on. But you need to figure out the correct angle to apply pressure on the keys, or else the flute will be having trouble with playing the bottom notes. Personally I’m having problems with the bottom notes, but a potential buyer who tried the flute out at my place the other day, played the flute with a strong tone across all registers. So it probably depends on the flutist.
