I saw and admiredmany pieces in shops, and on enquiry found they weremade in Langhelm. Our route home was subsequentlyamended so that we could visit the home of Border FineArts! On arrival a local retailer directed us to the factory.It was late in the day, and the factory had just shut. Aman came eut to talk to us, invited us into his office,enthused about “Thorionware” and its properties,showed us some pieces and gave me some leaflets. Thatman was John Hammond . little did I realize then that20 or so years later we would meet again to discuss thebook you are now reading. In the intervening years 1became a Border Fine Arts collecter, not just of piecesbut also of brechures, leaflets and price lists (in the caseof the latter items my husband would say a “hoarderer”but how useful my carefully “hoarded” items have nowbecome for they form the basis of this bookl| In everynew town we visited the local stocklist was soughtl I waswell and truly hooked. I became a founder member ofthe BFA Society and attended many BFA events. I havevisited Langholm and Border Fine Arts many times now,but it is that original occasion that still sticks in maymind, rather hke John Hammend’s own initial visit toLagholm. This book is the culmination of all these”Border Fine Arts” experiences and I hope thatcollectors old and new enjoy it alike!The Early DaysThe tourist guide “Discover Eskdale and Liddesdale”begins with an excerpt from a poem which reads:”Amidst the rolling Cheviots,The town of Langholm lies.A little off the beaten track,That’s why it’s Paradise.”The guide continues: “It has ofen been likened toBrigadoon – such is its charm that visitors often fearthat if they blink it could disappear in the mist.” Misthas some importance to the story of “Border Fine Arts*… without it Border Fine Arts almest certainly wouldnot have been founded in Langholm or indeed in theScottish Borders! Fate often takes a hand in thebest-laid plans and it defnitely played its part inconnection with Border Fine Arts.John Hammond, the founder of the company, wasattracted to this place of peace and tranquility during achance visit te the Borders. Langheim lies about 22miles north of Carlisle and nestles in the hills besidethe famous sea trout River Esk. Jehn had come northinvestigating the possibilities of setting up a businessmaking figurines. He had toured Northern England andarrived in the Lake District. Being so close to theScottish border, he decided to cross it just to aay he hadbeen to Scotland! On his return south, the mistsdescended and with visibility so poor be decided to findaccommodation for the night. Staying overnight inLangholm, be was taken by the kindness, warmth andgeneral friendliness of the Border people and he spent the next day exploring the aren before returning southto Winchester.A few short weeks later, John returned to seeMiddleholms, an 18th century farmhouse on theoutskirts of Langholm which had outbuildings offeringworkshop potential. The lease on Middleholms wasacquired – for once, the swirling Scottish mists had apositive outcome, as who knows what might havehappened had John been able to safely journey souththat night! John and seulptor Victor Hayton set up”Border Craft and Design,” with just three employeesand began to make cold-cast bronze and silver figurinesin late 1972.John travelled miles at the beginning promoting thecompany and gaining a foothold in the market. One dayJedburgh antique dealer Ron Turner informed him that’peaple likes ’em small and likes ’em painted.” Theadvice was to be acted upon, and back at Middleholmshe and the workforce discussed this. Experimentsbegan to research materials and paint, the latterinvolving paint-makers in Portsmouth who specialisedin anti-fouling paints. Finally, a special cold castingprocess was developed which allowed the sculptures tobe subsequently painted. The material developed wasnamed “Thorionware”T” and it offered the opportunityto make figurines with an incredible amount of detail.October 1974 was an important date for the companyas that was when the name “Border Fine Arts” wasregistered Middicholms In the early years Border Fine Arts was a very smallcraft operation with three employees, including RayAyres, based around the kitchen table at MiddleholmsFarm. John advertised locally for people with the abilityto paint and found a wealth of talent in and aroundLangholm.
