A native of South Bend, Indiana, Craig Counsell attended and played baseball for the University of Notre Dame, and was selected in Round 11 of the MLB Amateur Draft in 1992 by the Colorado Rockies. He first saw Major League playing time with that team in 1995. Traded to the Florida Marlins in July of 1997, Counsell scored the winning run for the Marlins in the bottom of the 11th inning of Game 7 of the 1997 World Series. He was traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1999, then signed with the Arizona Diamondbacks before the 2000 season. Counsell batted 8 for 21 in the 2001 National League Championship Series and won the NLCS Championship Series Most Valuable Player Award. In the bottom of the 9th inning of Game 7 of the 2001 World Series, he was hit by a pitch from the Yankee’s closer Mariano Rivera to load the bases for Luis Gonzalez’s Series-winning bloop single. After the 2003 season, Craig Counsell was traded to the Milwaukee Brewers, but returned to the Diamondbacks in 2005 for two more seasons, returning to the Brewers in 2007. A fan favorite regardless of where he played, Counsell was given standing ovations by Marlins and Diamondbacks fans whenever he came to bat in their ballparks during his last season as a player in 2011. Between 2012 and 2014, Counsell served the Milwaukee Brewers in various capacities, and then in May of 2015 he was hired as the Brewers’ Manager – a position he still holds. Craig Counsell has won more than 700 games as a Manager, with a winning percentage of .568 in 2023.
