Under the terms of the competition, the participants had to cover the distance of 18,200 kilometers between the airfields in Suffolk in England and Flemington in Melbourne. To participate in this race, aircraft designer Jeffrey De Havilland designed a specialized aircraft. De Havilland has ensured that the aircraft will meet all the conditions of the competition and cover the track at an average speed of at least 322 km / h. As a result of this advertisement, three orders were received. The aircraft were named DH-88 Comet. The first DH-88 was tested at the beginning of October 1934, and already on October 20, all three ordered cars started in the race: G-ACSP (registration designation). Commissioned by spouses Amy and Jim Mollison and named Black Magic. The plane made a non-stop flight to Baghdad, but finished the race in Allahabad (India) ahead of schedule – both engines were out of order due to low-quality fuel. G-ACSR.
