This early split ash fishing creel has a solid cedar lid with a single hole on the left side. It is an interesting shape that tapers in at the middle and out again to a bulbous base. The bottom is not woven to flat, but arches in slightly to allow the creel to rest on the four corners. I have not seen any creels made this way before but wonder if it was made that way to help the creel drain better. The weaving is in good condition, still tightly wove with no breaks to the strips. The hinge, which appears to be original, is strong and opens nicely. The bentwood ash double band around the top is solid and holds the creel basket tightly and has a nice row of original nails holding it in place. The finish is an old varnish or stain that has largely worn away. When it was originally applied it leaked through the inner basket to stain the ash and ran over parts of the upper rim and dried unevenly. It is approximately 9.5″ high x 11″ wide x 7′ deep.A very nice old creel that would be an asset to any collection. 100% of the proceeds from this sale will be donated to Samaritan’s Purse.
