I was collecting transistor radios before Marty Bunis, and many of the sets seen in Marty’s books are from my collection. My friend Lenny Bickford (RADIOMANNH on Radio Attic) changed the caps, tuned the set, and cleaned and polished the case, and now this can be yours.Here for your consideration is an Exceptional, Iconic 1955/6 Zenith Royal 500 “Owl Eye” Hand wired Transistor Radio with Both Looks & Sound! This was Zenith’s first entry into the transistor Radio market. These sets sold for $75.00 in mid-1955, considerably more than the $49.95 Regency TR-1s. Consumer Reports proclaimed this Zenith the best sounding Transistor Radio made at that time. This is early serial # 38890.This 3.5” x 1.5” x 6” set is about as good as I’ve ever seen with just one small flaw at about 4 o’clock by the speaker. The lettering around the two Owl Eye knobs is exceptional – without flaw. It plays LOUD and clear across the AM band picking up many stations. The volume control and tuning dial both work great, with NO scratchiness. It comes with the original hard to find cloth bag that states “ZENITH Royal “500” Tubeless All Transistor . This is truly an eye catching 69- year old transistor.You’d be hard pressed to find a better one. Period!
