eBay Goebel M.I. Hummel # 228 – “Good Friends” (Table Lamp) – Original Lamp Shade! – Wiring Looks Original & WORKS! – 7.625″ Tall (Larger Than Catalog Lists) – Full Bee Trademark (TMK-2) – Strong Colors with Gloss – Earliest Version Available – Temporarily Withdrawn in 1989 – Closed Edition HUM 228 – Good Friends, Table Lamp – TMK-2 Height – 7.625″ This table lamp/hummel was modeled by master sculptor Arthur Möeller and first produced in 1953. It was restyled many times through the years. On the older lamps the figure is much larger and the tree trunk is smooth. On the newer models the tree trunk has textured finish and figure is smaller. Same motif as Hummel Number 182 of the same name. This item was “temporarily withdrawn” (TW) from production on 31 December 1989, but may be reinstated at some future date. This figurine is an early closed edition. See below for the specifications: • Has “🐝” Full Bee Trademark (TMK-2) stamped in Blue on underside of base. This is the first available trademark! • Incised Hummel Number “228” and Factory Control Number “30” on underside of base. “M.I. Hummel” signature is incised on rear side of base. • Stamped “Germany” in black on underside of base. • Oversized – Hummel exceeds the height listed in the catalogs (7.5″) by about an eighth of an inch, standing at about 7.625″. The width is the exact size listed in the catalogs, measuring at about 4.25″ wide. • Earliest Version – Has the old style with smoother tree trunk finish and larger figure. • Colors are Strong and do retain Gloss. • Lamp retains Original silk lamp shade! Shade is in Excellent condition considering it’s age and rarity. No tears, but the silk is beginning to separate where it meets the metal interior frame at the top. May have some dust and a few tiny spots, but very nominal. Please view pictures. I did not want to attempt to clean it for fear of damaging it. • Wiring appears to be Original! It looks old! Through much research, I was unable to verify conclusively due to very little information available online regarding the wiring of the lamps. I saw many different styles of wiring online but this one looks like the oldest wire with the old 2-prong plug. Please view pictures. • Lamp Works!!! I installed a bulb, plugged it into a receptacle and it lit up immediately after flipping the switch! It was stored in the attic for decades! • Temporarily Withdrawn (TW) from production by Goebel on December 31st, 1989, but may be reinstated at some future date. • Closed Edition. • Hummel Lamp is in Excellent condition considering it’s age and rarity! No Repairs! No Touch Ups! No Chips! Original Silk Shade! There is crazing throughout the piece. It is very difficult to see from a distance. I took a picture, last picture in photos, under magnification and bright light. There is also what appears to be a brush stroke of white paint on the side of the base. Please view second from last picture. I did not try to remove it. There also may be some dust throughout. I did not want to damage it inadvertently by cleaning it. • I do have the matching companion lamp in working condition, Hummel Number 227, “She Loves Me, She Loves Me Not” lamp with original shade, same wiring as this one and same Full Bee TMK-2 trademark. It is currently listed separately. I am willing to deduct 15% off the list prices and combine shipping if both are purchased.
