ITEM꞉ Historical invoice / bill from the Folger’s Coffee Company, San Francisco, California. PRODUCT PURCHASED / INVOICED: “Golden Gate High Grade” Japan Tea. AMOUNT OF INVOICE: $18.00 FORM PRINTED BY꞉ Unknown. WATERMARKED?: Yes! J. A. Fogler Company was so big, that their invoices were printed on custom watermarked stationary baring the Fogler Company name. DATE ON THE INVOICE꞉ October 23, 1897. NUMBER OF YEARS OLD꞉ Over 125-years old.. MEASURES꞉ Approximately 8⅜” x 5¼”. IMAGES ON THE INVOICE꞉ An old man carrying a pick and shovel with the text “Established May 1850, Incorporated Feb 5, 1890. Pioneer Steam Coffee & Spice Mills.” ABOUT J. A. FOLGER & COMPANY, SAN FRANCISCO: James Athearn “J. A.” Folger Sr., was an American businessman and the founder of the Folgers Coffee Company. Folger was born on June 17, 1835, in Nantucket, Massachusetts to Samuel and Nancy Folger. After the discovery of gold in California, James (age 14), along with his brothers Henry (age 16) and Edward (age 20) set out in the autumn of 1849 on a ship bound for the Isthmus of Panama. Later, on April 10, 1850, the brothers caught the Pacific mail steamer Isthmus which entered the Golden Gate on May 5, 1850. Rather than join his brothers heading to the gold fields, James opted to stay in San Francisco. He helped reconstruct the town after one of San Francisco’s many fires. James helped build a spice-and-coffee mill for a man named William H. Bovee. In 1860, James founded the San Francisco coffee firm known as the J. A. Folger Coffee Company, known today simply as Folgers Coffee. NOTE: The above research contradicts the date printed on the invoice which indicates the company was established in May 1850, the month and year the boys arrived in San Francisco. ABOUT ISDELL MERCANTILE COMPANY, PONY, MONTANA: The Isdell Mercantile Company building still stands today in the ghost town of Pony. At one time, the company employed fourteen clerks. It was built of stone in 1880 and at one time, housed a school, the town’s post office and accommodated town meetings. The Isdell Mercantile Company was created in 1869 by N. J. Isdell in the town of Pony, Montana. Once called the “metropolis of the Madison Valley” by the “Madisonian,” Pony was a boom town created by major quartz discoveries in 1875. The mercantile was incorporated in 1892. By 1900, the town had a schoolhouse, bank, newspaper, hotels, and several saloons. This growth, made possible by wealth from local mining operations, allowed the small mercantile to prosper. The Isdell Mercantile Company provided hardware, mining supplies, and various dry goods to the community. The mercantile went out of business when the quartz mining was halted in the Pony area. By the 1940s, the town was completely abandoned.
