Offered here is the highest graded copy of King Comics #1 from April, 1936. CGC 6.5 with off-white to white pages. Label notes: ”very minor amount of glue on cover.” This book features the first appearances of Flash Gordon, Brick Bradford, Henry, and Mandrake the Magician. To me, this should also count as the first appearance of Popeye, though Overstreet doesn’t note it (Popeye appeared in Platinum Age books from before this comic, but clearly this is his first appearance in what most people would consider to be a regular comic book). This book is non-existent in high grade, so Overstreet only lists prices up to VF. This copy is tied with one other 6.5 atop the CGC census, with only 12 blue label copies having been graded. A rare book, pre-dating Action 1 by more than two years. It would likely be considerably more expensive, if copies ever changed hands, but there have only been a handful of public sales (on lower grade copies) in the past decade. Recently, MyComicShop sold a CBCS 5.0 copy for over $10,000. U.S. bidders only, due to the value.
