Circa the 1990s.Genji Imaizumi is an important name in the Tsuchiyu tradition of kokeshi making. During more than six decades of his highly productive career, Imaizumi-san made a major contribution to preserving the tradition and enriching it with his personal style. This large, noticeable figurine is an excellent example of his work. Its eye-catching shape, large size, and authentic character will make it a noticeable art accent in the decor of one’s home. It is made of dense wood and is in excellent, collectible condition.Height: 12.5 inches. Weight: 1.75 lbs (792 g). Genji ImaizumiGenji Imaizumi was born on July 20, 1934, in Tsuchiyu Onsen, Fukushima Prefecture, in a family of silk makers. He was a great-grandson of Sakuzo Watanabe, a silk maker, who also made kokeshi dolls in Tsuchiyu and was one of the earlier craftsmen in the Tsuchiyu tradition. Genji graduated from Tsuchiyu Elementary School in March 1949 and worked in the mountains. In 1958, he learned to make kokeshi dolls, mainly watching the work of Abe Hiroshi and Sato Sashima, the local kokeshi artists. In 1960, he started his own business. His early kokeshi dolls were rich in color, influenced by Tajiro and Sashima, but in May 1968, he turned to the earlier Tsuchiyu prototypes: the Asanosuke style and, later, the Yukiko style. Since then, he gradually absorbed the Yukichi style into his own. Sometimes he would paint small flowers such as irises in between the circles. Around 1971, he instructed Tsunehiko Watanabe in kokeshi making. Watanabe-san had a reputation of being a very cheerful, carefree man who would make people laugh with his light-hearted jokes, but his kokeshi making was meticulous, careful, and skilled. He passed away on September 25, 2023, at the age of 90. Tsuchiyu SchoolTsuchiyu tradition originated in the 1840s at Tsuchiyu Onsen in Fukushima Prefecture, with the work of Sakuma Kamegoro, a woodworker.Tsuchiyu artists are famous for being the most accomplished in the circular style of painting, known as the rokuro moyo style. While this technique is present in other traditions, Tsuchiyu makers take it several steps further: they often either reverse the line at some point or zig-zag the lines periodically, adding dynamic energy to the design. Some dolls even have patterns of flowers between the lines.The Tsuchiyu artists typically utilize snap-on and squeeze-in techniques for attaching the heads, which are delicate techniques requiring advanced woodworking skills and high precision. Most have double lid eyes and round or long noses. The top of the head is typically completed with one or two black (occasionally purple or green) concentric circles, together with a red bow and a loop. The innermost circle of the head is usually colorless. For many decades, Tsuchiyu dolls targeted predominantly collectors, and their artistic quality is typically very high.
