The figural BLACK PARROT has modeling, decorating, and glaze that are very well done in a flat glazed monochrome. The Parrot is perched atop a rocky plinth, and in form is very similar to the classic Chinese design. The makers mark of “MINTONS ENGLAND” is in raised relief in a plaque on the glazed recessed bottom. The rimfoot is unglazed. Dimensions (in inches): 8.8 Tall X 3.3 Wide X 5.5 Deep Weight 15.9 Oz. The estimated date is Edwardian Period. circa 1900. This MINTON MAJOLICA BLACK PARROT ON PLINTH is in very good condition. It is noted that there are some drips in the glaze and some small specks from the original firing in the kiln. Condition status includes minimal normal wear and rubbing, typical crazing, minor glaze losses, firing flaws, and fretting. Overall, this work is sound, having no chips, cracks, or major defects, and having had no apparent repairs or restorations. It is noted that old majolica is not inherently “perfect” – pieces were still mold formed in this era and as such have marks like little dents in the pottery which are glazed over. Minton Majolica Minton Majolica is the rare tin-glazed majolica made in Britain only, primarily from 1848 to circa 1880. Typically, it has flat surfaces, opaque white glaze with fine brush painted decoration in imitation of the Italian Renaissance maiolica process and styles. Historically, “Minton ware” was cream-colored and blue-printed earthenware maiolica, bone china, and Parian porcelain produced at a factory founded in 1793 in Stoke-upon-Trent, Staffordshire, Eng., by Thomas Minton, who popularized the famous so-called Willow pattern. In the 1820s he started production of bone china; this early Minton is regarded as comparable to French Sèvres, by which it was greatly influenced. Minton’s was the only English china factory of the 19th century to employ a Sèvres technical process called pâte-sur-pâte (q.v.; painted decoration in white clay slip instead of enamel before glazing). Minton also produced Parian figures. The Minton factory was the most popular supply source in the 19th century of dinnerware made to order for embassies and for heads of state.
