Miniature paintings are so much fun to collect. This lovely little seascape measures just about 10 inches by 8 inches. I don’t really know the age but I would wager it is early 20th century. It is always possible that it was one of an earlier wave of Impressionist painters who produced this. There is an elegant monogram signature which is an H contained in its own circle. I was thinking this signifies HP and did a little research on it but could not locate the artist. You cannot see the downward extension of the circle form so it is also possible that it is HS, HC, or HG. This feels like the work of an accomplished artist, so you very well may be getting the work of a listed artist at a great price. I say that because of the expert way the artist has handled so many forces and vectors in the composition. The busyness is captured as a delicious balance of forces. You can sense the weather of the day and the brewing storm that is coming. The color sense, the palette, is intuitive, interesting and unusual. I did a little research but I was not able to establish provenance. So it is offered up as a mystery piece. This theme was popular in the 19th century with artists like Claude Monet contributing works like Bateaux Sur La Plage. The setting is a mystery too, but I’m wondering if we should lean towards the Mediterranean since the tree there looks like a stone pine. Lovely duskiness of the colors with age. This is another reason I believe this was painted in the first few decades of the 20th century. The period frame is charming with lovely texture and patterning. It appears by the pastedown and the wire on the back that someone has taken the care to have it seen by a gallery in recent years. This lends credence to the theory that someone recognized this as a valued work, possibly produced by an artist of note. The last photograph was taken in natural light as a comparison.
