Rare and Important Antique Creek Woodland American Indian Large Hickory-Splint Winnowing Basket, Circa 1840-1890’s This large and extraordinary utilitarian winnowing basket is attributed to the Creek Woodland American Indians from the Southeast U.S., after their 1830’s Removal to Oklahoma, where they now reside. The basket was made by a master basket-maker who employed split-hickory splints woven in a plaited pattern to create a strong yet flexible oval tray basket with the edges rising up to form short side walls. The heavier warp elements (running horizontally in the primary photos) retain some of their dark red inner bark. The rim is formed with a hickory shoot left unsplit and bent to create the long oval form. The weft splints are thinner and woven across the sturdier warp. Where the weft approaches the rim, they were finely split to form the narrower rim stitches, which are wrapped around the rim. This rim finish is very fine with an additional element of dark inner bark woven over groups of 3-6 rim stitches and under groups of 2-4 rim stitches, forming a well thought-out device that further secured the rim-binding stitches, while also creating a wonderful simple decorative pattern. The rim is significantly thicker where the bent unsplit shoot forming the rim foundation is lapped and secured together, suggesting that this edge would be the preferred side for both hands to hold the basket during the winnowing process. Overall, this thoughtfully designed construction and precise weaving, with carefully trimmed and prepared splints creating an extremely tightly woven surface, is beautiful and impressive. It seems likely that this basket was made after the Creek’s relocation to Indian Territory, later Oklahoma, in the 1830’s. The flawless condition of this basket and its lovely patina imply that it was carefully stored when not in use or that it was only briefly used before it was collected. These authors also describe how the Creeks of Oklahoma employed mainly hickory to create their baskets. This basket is a rare masterpiece worthy of an advanced collector or museum collection. Condition: Excellent with no damage or repairs, wear commensurate with age and us. Retains a lovely patina on the working surface.
