This is an interesting period in Neil Young’s career. The first few releases are from the tail end of his contract with Geffen, in which he released some unusual CDs. The last few find him back with Reprise and setting his career back on fire. This is a great collection, and the import from Germany, Amsterdam ’89 tops it off. Included are:Landing on Water – 1986 – A bit underrated, the album rocks. “Violent Side”, “Hard Luck Stories” and Drifter” are among the best cuts. Life – 1987 – With Crazy Horse, I love “Mideast Vacation” and “Around the World” This Note’s For You – 1988 – With the Bluenotes, his final Geffen release. It’s an R&B, Blues album in a 1950s-1960’s style. “Ten Men Workin'” and his well known commentary on concert sponsorship, “This Note’s For You” are the best cuts. Lucky Thirteen – Geffen’s release of the best of Neil Young on that label. Also subtitled “Excursions into Alien Territory”, it includes computerized music, country with Waylon Jennings, rock and blues, all previously released. Freedom – 1989 – Back on Reprise, with one of his greatest records in some time. In the style of “Rust Never Sleeps” it opens and closes with an acoustic version and a rocking version of the same song, “the now classic “Rockin’ in the Free World” with many more classics in between. “Eldorado”, “Someday”, “Wrecking Ball”, “Too Far Gone” and more. Amsterdam ’89 – 1990 – Recorded in December 1989, this rare import is primarily solo acoustic, but he does get some help from Frank Sampedro and Ben Keith. It is an excellent live recording, including much of Freedom, but also including classics from his first 3 albums as well as “Ohio”. Get it while you can! Ragged Glory – 1990 – Neil with the Horse, rocking as only they can. “Country Home”, “F*!#in’ Up”, “Love to Burn”, “Days That Used to Be”. Another killer album.
