At the same time, much attention was paid to reducing the boat’s own noise, increasing the duration of combat patrols, as well as the ability to actively counteract the enemy’s anti-submarine forces. The lead SSBN of this class was SSBN 616 LAFAYETTE, launched from the Electric Boat shipyard on May 8, 1962. In the first series, 9 boats were built. On July 19, 1961, President J. Kennedy approved the construction of 10 SSBNs of the second series (SSBN 627 JAMES MADISON, SSBN 628 TECUMSEN, SSBN 629 DANIEL BOONE, SSBN 630 JOHN C. CALHOUN, SSBN 631 ULYSSES S. GRANT, SSBN 632 VON STUBEN, SSBN 632 VON STUBEN CASIMIR PULASKI, SSBN 634 STONEWALL JACKSON, SSBN 635 SAM RAYBURN, SSBN 636 NATHANAEL GREENE). Their construction began at four shipyards in parallel with the boats of the first series. In their geometrical dimensions they did not differ from Lafayette. However, the use of new technologies in the field of underwater shipbuilding has made it possible to reduce the level of its own noise. Some of the equipment was replaced with a more advanced one, unified with the equipment of torpedo boats of the THRESHER type. Over a long service life, various tasks were assigned to boats of this class. In the 60s, the main task was considered to be striking cities. With the adoption of the Poseidon missiles, additional tasks were set to defeat the enemy’s launching intercontinental ballistic missiles and single military targets that do not have a high degree of protection.
