Rare, spare, elegant set of six gray ceramic sake cups made by the famed NYC pottery duo William Forauer and Elmer Gross, known as WEG, in the 1970s. Each cup is different in its own way, with its swirls of darker gray in the lighter color. There is an atomic feeling about them without the now retro graphics of their true atomic pieces. Sophisticated and elemental. I purchased these at their tiny Madison Avenue shop when I was quite young. They were friends and Upper East Side neighbors and I visited them many times; Will was the artisan and Elmer the businessman. They were partners both professionally and personally and could not have been more different temperamentally. They started out in Greenwich Village but much later had a sweet little shop in the low 80s on Madison Avenue that was crammed with not only their own goods, but wonderful pieces they picked up during buying trips around the world. Their work is rarely available these days and is quite collectible. I have treasured these cups but alas, I have never used them. It’s time for them to find a new home. They have lived in a box for decades and deserve better than that. Dimensions: 1.75 x 2.4 inches. There is one tiny chip on the rim of one of the cups (pictured).
